Bits and bytes

Computers store everything as bits: 1s and 0s. Eight bits make a byte, which can hold a number from 0 to 255. A kilobyte is about a thousand bytes, a megabyte a million, a gigabyte a billion.

Key points

  • 1 byte = 8 bits
  • One byte stores 256 different values
  • Text, images and video are all just bytes
