Computer & Online Safety Basics / How computers work

Lesson 2 of 30

CPU, RAM and storage

The CPU does the work, RAM holds what you're using right now, and storage (an SSD or hard drive) keeps files when the power is off. RAM is fast but forgets everything on shutdown.

Key points

  • More RAM lets you keep more apps open
  • SSDs are far faster than spinning hard drives
  • The CPU's speed is measured in GHz and cores
