Loopback and localhost

127.0.0.1 (and ::1 in IPv6) always means 'this machine'. The name localhost points to it. Services bound to it can't be reached from other computers.

Key points

  • 127.0.0.1 = this computer
  • Great for testing
  • Binding to 127.0.0.1 keeps a service private
