Lesson 8 of 25

SHA-256 and MD5

SHA-256 is today's standard. MD5 and SHA-1 are broken: people can make two different files with the same hash. Don't use them for security.

Key points

  • SHA-256 or SHA-3 for integrity
  • MD5 and SHA-1 are broken
  • Still fine for non-security checksums
