Types of hackers

Beginner 路 5 min read

White hat, black hat, grey hat and the rest, and what makes hacking legal or not.

What 'hacker' really means

Originally a hacker was anyone who loved figuring out how systems really work and bending them to do new things. The word now usually means someone who breaks into systems, but the curiosity is the same.

The hats

  • White hat: ethical hackers who test systems with permission and report what they find. Penetration testers and bug bounty hunters work here.
  • Black hat: criminals who break in without permission for money, data or damage.
  • Grey hat: people who break in without permission but don't intend harm, often reporting the flaw afterwards. Still illegal in most places.
  • Script kiddies: beginners who run other people's tools without understanding them.
  • Hacktivists: attackers driven by a political or social cause.
  • State actors: government teams with big budgets and long-term goals.

The line that matters: permission

The same scan, the same tool and the same skill can be a paid job or a crime. The difference is written permission from the owner of the system. Without it, testing someone else's network can break computer misuse laws, including Kuwait's cybercrime law.
